Staley Putnam, MSc | Sport Psychology & Clinical Counseling East Bay Rhode Island
Meet Staley – Clinician
Staley is a dedicated counseling professional who combines research expertise with a compassionate, hands-on approach to therapy. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from the University of Rhode Island and a Master of Science in Sport and Exercise Psychology from Loughborough University. Staley is currently working toward independent licensure and provides therapeutic services under the direct supervision of a licensed clinician.
Staley’s goal is to help clients navigate life’s hurdles—whether they are personal stressors or performance-related challenges—by building resilience and a stronger mindset. He believes that while we cannot control every event in life, we can control our beliefs surrounding them. Staley draws inspiration from the idea that our perspective shapes our reality, a philosophy best summarized by Shakespeare: “There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so.”
Specialties and Therapeutic Approach
Staley specializes in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), with specific expertise in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT). His approach is collaborative and data-driven, helping clients identify the negative thought patterns that may be contributing to emotional distress.
Whether working with an athlete facing performance anxiety or a child navigating social conflict, Staley strives to create a safe, supportive environment where clients feel understood. He works with individuals to challenge limiting beliefs, develop flexible thinking, and build practical skills that lead to lasting change.
Experience and Background
Staley brings extensive experience working with children, adolescents, and families across a variety of settings, including schools, recreational programs, and clinical environments. His background includes facilitating developmental programs and teaching conflict resolution skills to promote social and emotional growth.
In addition to his clinical work, Staley has a strong research background, including a dissertation on moral disengagement in athletes. This gives him a nuanced understanding of how environmental and social factors influence decision-making and behavior. He uses this comprehensive perspective to adapt his therapeutic approach to meet the unique developmental needs of each client.
